HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University has been selected as a “Best for Vets College” by the Military Times Edge. NKU was the only university in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region to achieve a ranking and is one of five Kentucky four-year universities ranked in the top 50.

According to Military Times, more than 600 schools responded to a 150-question analysis of programs, policies and resources to support student veterans. This highly respected selection process also factored in statistics such as student loan default rates, retention rates, graduation rates and student-faculty ratios as provided by Department of Education.

“Northern Kentucky University has established a national reputation for providing exceptional academic support and services to veterans and their family members,” said NKU President Geoffrey Mearns. “I am pleased that our efforts have been recognized by Military Times and GI Jobs.” Earlier this year, NKU was selected by GI Jobs magazine for the fourth consecutive year as “Military Friendly,” a recognition placing the university in the top 15 percent of all universities in the nation.

“This recognition honors the truly collaborative work that is being done throughout our campus to support the more than 500 student veterans and family members who attend NKU,” said Dave Merriss, assistant director of veterans services. “We are continually working to refine our efforts, listen to students sincerely and better assist them in their transition from the military to campus life and graduation.”

As part of NKU’s Student Success Center initiative, the university recently opened a Veterans Resource Station in the University Center where veterans are offered a welcoming, dedicated space to study, socialize and connect. Additional information about the Veterans Resource Station is available at http://veterans.nku.edu.

The NKU student veteran organization Norse V.E.T.S. holds its bi-monthly meetings at the resource station, and Norse V.E.T.S. President Chris Hammann noted the numerous Veterans Day events taking place on campus this week. “NKU is hosting a variety of Veterans Day celebration activities throughout the week including a flag raising and wreath laying ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Chase College of Law flagpole.” For a list of all NKU Veterans Day events visit http://veterans.nku.edu/celebration.htm.

The Military Edge is an organization comprising the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times that is a trusted independent source for news information for the military community.
